A Blockbuster Night

Two Greensboro Public Library rental DVDs, "Laura" and "Groundhog Day," resting on a warm, dark wood grain table, showcasing the yellow library barcode tape across the cases.

Making it a Blockbuster night.

With the hot weather, we’re not doing much outside (other than checking on the garden and starts each morning), so I thought I’d highlight our new tradition. In our little bungalow, either Friday or Saturday is a Blockbuster night. We walk to the downtown branch of the Greensboro Public Library and check out a DVD or two. We might have something in mind, like when I put The Da Vinci Code on hold after reading it for the first time. I picked up a mass market paperback from the free library around the corner from our house, and we thought it would be fun to watch the movie. More recently, we checked out Groundhog Day and Laura. These two were impromptu choices after perusing the library’s video collection. Both experiences mirrored a weekend trip to Blockbuster, at least as I remember it.

The Blockbuster night gives us a chance to take a nice walk through the neighborhood and downtown, and it’s a free source of indoor entertainment. The walk is definitely a morning activity (and not for days like today when it was nearly eighty degrees by seven in the morning), but the evenings with a good movie and some popcorn freshly popped on the stove have been a nice break from the heat. Why not make it a Blockbuster night?
