Unearthing the Wall

A close-up view of the edge of a low concrete retaining wall running parallel to a weathered, grey wooden privacy fence in a Greensboro, North Carolina backyard.

Probably original wall in our yard.

Our little bungalow was built almost a hundred years ago and is in the first suburban neighborhood in Greensboro. On the north side of the house, we have a shared driveway, which is a pretty common feature on the streets around us. On the south side, running almost the length of the property is a low garden wall. It’s buried under dirt in some places, overgrown in others. It doesn’t run the length of the property because massive tree roots have upended it in spots. It is, like the beautiful, old camellias, one of the things that drew me to this house. Today, James took a shovel to one of the buried sections and exposed even more of it. It’s too hot today to just sit and stare at it, but perhaps later this evening…
