Out with the Ivy
Post ivy clearing session this afternoon.
Today was about clearing things in the front yard. I pulled ivy and wild grape from the dense area on the south side of the front yard, creating some breathing room for the carpet of hostas that’s trying to develop. I'm hoping to create a shady paradise for transplanting some others that are getting a little burned on the south side of the house. At the same time, James worked on the ivy under the camellia and azaleas in front of our house. I had thinned and trimmed it, and we couldn’t decide whether we wanted to live with it. There’s English ivy throughout the neighborhood, and I liked the nod to vintage approaches to ground cover. Then we went to visit his mom for a couple of days, and it was growing up the base of the camellia and azaleas, and the latter looked wilty. We realized that it just wasn’t something we were interested in managing any longer. Like with the north side of the back yard, we’re clearing it as best we can, covering it with cardboard, and mulching over it. Chalk up another win for good enough gardening.
