More Seedy Fun on the Farm

Lots of new seeds in the ground today.

This week farm day was on Tuesday. The seed experiments continued, mostly vegetables this time around. I picked up a cold season seed bundle from Botanical Interests, and we planted onions, carrots, broccoli, two kinds of lettuce, turnips, and bok choy. We also tossed some zinnias and cosmos for an end-of-summer glow (hopefully) as well as violas for the fall. Over in herb town, we sowed some white swan echinacea, broadleaf sage, English thyme, and true hyssop, mostly to get some established roots for next year’s harvest. We also planted two rama tulsis that I had started from seed alongside the existing sweet-leaf basil plants. The plan there is lots of small picking for now with a big final harvest of those plants in October. Over in the pumpkin patch (i.e., the three rows where we planted pumpkins and Halloween radishes), we added some black kat minis. I know we’re late on pumpkins, but I really had to give it a try. I’m new to all of this, and I couldn’t imagine heading into fall without at least trying it.

This really is a family affair. Dad hoes the row, I drop the seed or starter, mom writes up the plant markers.
