Moonflower Is Moonflowering

Green vines with large heart-shaped leaves climbing up a black metal obelisk trellis in a Greensboro, NC backyard garden, with a wooden fence and a two-story blue house with red brick chimneys in the background.

An intentional mystery in the garden.

Yesterday we had two and a half inches of rain. I know this because James showed me the rain gauge. All of the rain has turbo-charged growth on a number of things in the garden, including this moonflower. It hasn’t bloomed yet, but once it landed in the its own large pot, it shot up the obelisk and is reaching for the sky. I’m so intrigued by this beautiful weirdo. I’ll even leave the house after dark in order to see its white petals and catch its sweet scent.

James is on his second week back at work, and I’m starting my first week of my new routine. (Last week I visited his mother and some friends for a few days.) So far, so good with the new loose structure. I planted starts of tobacco jasmine, echinacea, winter savory, yarrow, and garden sage in the backyard north fence bed. I sowed some statice and globe amaranth in the front raised bed and lemon balm and wild bergamot in a terracotta pot. In trays, I started clary sage, second attempts at French thyme and anise hyssop, dill, and sweet leaf basil.

Mondays are my creative block days, and today I decided to focus on planting and updating the current season. I also did some research on infused oils. The first batch will be black tea and homegrown mint infused sunflower oil for a sweet tea lip balm. I also read about making hand-dipped candles. I think I want to try that. Creative Monday feels like a success, even if much of it was spend daydreaming about future projects.
