Flittin’ and Sittin’

A Ruby-throated hummingbird captured mid-flight, silhouetted against a bright blue sky with fluffy white clouds, as it approaches a red glass hummingbird feeder hanging from a porch roof in Gibsonville, North Carolina.

A little porch sittin’ and hummingbird flittin’.

When I was young, like YOUNG young, I didn’t much like to sit still. My mom was always saying, stop flittin’ around and light somewhere. My tendency to flit translated to a bit of wanderlust in my old age (or at least moving house every few years), as I am now a big fan of sitting. Sit and read, sit and watch the birds, sit in front of the screen and tap, tap, tap. In the case of this photo, sit on the porch with my mom and catch up while James and my dad built a raised bed for our front yard.

I won’t say that the need to keep moving is gone, but I am really enjoying being still these days. There’s something about being back in North Carolina that’s inspiring stillness. It’s not that humidity or that hot, not yet anyway, and the breezes have been cool and frequent. Part of it is being back near family, back at home. After being a couple thousand miles away for so many years, I definitely want to stay in place. After being in the desert, the canopy of old-growth trees still catches me off ground, even after a month in my new old home.
