First Day on the Farm

So Wednesdays are farm days. I’ll spend them with my parents, primarily to hang out with them but also to work on projects and do a little of my own farming. While I was there today, mom and dad picked watermelon, cantaloupe, and squash. This led to one of my favorite things, freshly cut watermelon still warm from the garden. We each had a big slice, and mom even sent me home with some leftovers from one they’d cut a couple of days ago.

After the harvest, we headed to Smith Farms (@smithfarmsgibsonville) for tomatoes. I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned them before, but this is my favorite local farm. They have a nursery with some vegetable and herbs starts, ferns, and ornamental plants in the spring, and their vegetable “stand” opens in July. I have experienced a full fall yet, but we definitely got some gorgeous pumpkins there last year. I’d say it’s worth the trip if you’re in the Triad.

One thing that I’m most excited about for Farm Wednesdays is working on projects with my parents. We did a little figuring at the kitchen table after lunch for making a seed library and a potting table. We’ll probably take care of those next week. When it dries out a bit, we’ll do some planting for late summer/early fall. I know there will be crafts at some point, just not sure what they’ll be.
